Why Fasting Before Certain Procedures?
In some treatments—though rare—stomach contents may enter the lungs (aspiration), which can lead to serious complications. Fasting helps minimize this risk, allowing us to focus entirely on your procedure and perform it under optimal conditions.
Your physician will inform you directly if fasting is required for your procedure.
Clear Fasting Guidelines
If fasting has been ordered for your procedure:
From 6 hours before the procedure:
- No solid food
- No milk or dairy products
Up to 2 hours before the procedure, the following are permitted:
- Water
- Unsweetened or lightly sweetened tea/coffee (without milk)
- Carbonated soft drinks
- Clear fruit juices (without pulp)
Medications: Key Considerations
Unless specifically instructed otherwise by your physician, continue taking all your regular medications as usual with a small sip of water.
Special attention is required for:
- Blood-thinning medications (e.g., Marcoumar, Xarelto, Rivaroxaban, Eliquis, Clopidogrel)
- Diabetes medications (particularly insulin)
Please always clarify the intake of these medications individually with your treating physician. Together, we will determine whether and how you should take them before the procedure to ensure both your safety and the success of the treatment.
